Njord

Njord is the god of the winds and he controls both the sea and fire. He is also the god of fertility in and around the sea. So if you are going boating, fishing or hunting, Njord is the one you give sacrifice too.
He is the father of Frey and Freya, which he had with his first wife (who also was he’s sister). Njord came to live as a hostage by the Aesir after the war between the Asgaard and Vanerheim was over. Later Njord married the giantess Skade, but they were not happy. For Njord and Skade could not agree on, they would live by the sea or the mountains. There's a whole story written about how and why they became husband and wife.

There are not many places in Denmark, which is named after Njord, but at the Norwegian west coast it is on the other hand very common. Njord was probably most popular in places where they lived much of fishing, and where you had to sail to travel around.
